As a new mum to my little one, Charlie, I’ve recently experienced the reality of just how important a newborn photo session is.

Everyone told me that babies grow fast, but now I truly understand this feeling for myself. It’s blown my mind how those tiny little toes and hands don’t stay tiny for long!

A newborn session allows you to freeze those fleeting moments in time, giving you something special to look back on for years to come as your child grows up.

In this blog post, I’m going to share some tips to help you plan for your newborn photo session, so you have your own memories to cherish.

Grab a cup of coffee and read on!

Preparing for Your Session

First up, let’s talk about preparing for your session! These sessions can be held at home or at your favourite local spot, like the beach or the park.

If you choose an in-home session, don’t worry about making everything spotless – just focus on one area that you like with the best light (the lounge room, baby’s nursery and parent’s bedroom are spots I’ll usually use).

Let’s talk about wardrobe – choose clothes that you feel comfortable and confident in and that complement your baby’s outfit as well. A nice flowy top for Mum or a casual button-up shirt for Dad can work great, for example. Lighter colours are often best for newborn shoots too! For your baby, they’re already so cute, and we’ll mostly be capturing them with blankets or swaddles, so you can just keep them comfortable in a simple onesie – but if you have some cute outfits you might like to include, please keep them handy for your shoot.

The Day of Your Session

During your session, I’ll guide you on how to pose and we’ll also capture plenty of natural and candid moments.

And don’t fret – as a mum myself, I understand that those first few weeks with a newborn can be really exhausting, so we will take things at your own pace.

If you need to take a break to feed your baby, that’s perfectly fine! I get it.

After the Session

I’ll edit your photos with as much care and attention to detail that went into our session together, and will have them ready in an online gallery within 2 weeks. If you’ve chosen your package, you can select your favourite images and photos to print from your online gallery.

If you’ve selected a package with printed options (like an album or wall art) and would like some help with choosing the right images, we can book in a design appointment over Zoom as well.

Some of my clients like to turn their images into beautiful photo albums or boutique print boxes, and others like to create DIY photo walls. If you want to explore any of these options, I can help you out!
