If you’re searching for a Brisbane wedding venue that blends heritage charm, stunning riverside views and a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere, Officers Mess in New Farm is a venue worth discovering. Once a historic military building, this riverside gem has been reimagined into one of Brisbane’s most scenic and versatile wedding destinations.

Location & Setting
Perched along the Brisbane River at 50 Oxlade Drive, New Farm, The Officers Mess offers a unique mix of city convenience and tranquillity. Just minutes from the heart of the city, it gives couples and guests the feeling of an elegant escape without the long drive. The venue’s lawn area opens directly onto sweeping riverfront views, shaded by jacaranda trees that bloom in spring with soft purple hues – a truly magical backdrop for a ceremony or sunset portraits.
From a photographer’s perspective, the light here is exceptional. The open lawns, river reflections and leafy surrounds create natural beauty in every direction. Whether it’s golden hour by the water or moody evening shots under the festoon lights, the variety of light and scenery at The Officers Mess makes it a dream for any wedding photographer in Brisbane.

Venue Features
The Officers Mess combines its World War II–era architecture with modern design, resulting in a space that feels both classic and contemporary. The venue’s main building retains much of its original charm with high ceilings, heritage windows and warm timber floors… while offering all the modern comforts couples expect. The Ballroom is a standout feature: an elegant indoor space ideal for sit-down receptions, cocktail evenings or formal dinners, complete with vintage chandeliers and views over the river.
Just outside, the lawn provides a natural setting for outdoor ceremonies or relaxed cocktail hours. Guests can enjoy river breezes and uninterrupted views while you sneak away for sunset portraits. For couples who prefer a seamless day, The Officers Mess allows ceremonies, photos and receptions to all take place within one location, making the experience beautifully cohesive.

Capacity & Versatility
Whether you’re planning an intimate celebration or a grand affair, The Officers Mess offers remarkable flexibility. The venue can host small gatherings of around fifty guests for a private, elegant celebration or accommodate larger groups when combining indoor and outdoor spaces. The main Ballroom and adjoining lawns can be configured in multiple ways – perfect for both sit-down dinners and cocktail-style receptions.
Because the spaces flow naturally from one area to another, it’s easy to create distinct moments throughout your wedding day: a riverside ceremony under the trees, cocktails on the lawn and dinner and dancing in the heritage hall. This versatility makes it a wonderful option for couples who want to personalise their event.

From a Photographer’s Lens
As a Brisbane wedding photographer, I love venues that tell a story through their spaces and The Officers Mess does exactly that. There’s something so unique about walking from the old-world ballroom to the open lawns beside the river and then capturing that final moment by the river as the sun sets over the city.
For couples, this means less travel between locations and more time soaking in the experience. There are quite a few photo locations onsite and there are many offsite options within a short walk or drive.
My favourite offsite photo locations nearby (just to name a few) are Newfarm park and the Brisbane Powerhouse, wandering the local streets and a city rooftop in the Valley. You don’t have to go far for your portraits and you can be back within an hour (not including travel).

The Officers Mess is more than a wedding venue, it’s an experience that blends Brisbane’s riverside charm with timeless architecture and modern luxury. For couples seeking a New Farm wedding venue that’s elegant yet relaxed, or for those who want a space that’s as photogenic as it is practical, this location delivers it all.
If you’re planning your wedding and want to see how beautifully this venue photographs, I’d love to show you what’s possible here. As someone who’s captured love stories across Brisbane’s most scenic spaces, The Officers Mess remains one of my favourite spots to create timeless, heartfelt imagery.
