Eloping has become a popular choice for couples seeking a more intimate, stress-free wedding experience and I love it! Brisbane, with it’s beautiful location, city life, and subtropical climate, offers the perfect backdrop for your elopement. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to plan your Brisbane elopement, from the best time of year, to top photography locations, to superstar wedding vendors and how to choose the ideal location for your special day.

Best Time of Year to Elope in Brisbane

Brisbane’s climate is known for its sunshine and mild Winters and warm Summers, but it’s always important to consider how the seasons may change the elopement experience.

Spring (September to November): With mild, warm temperatures and blooming gardens, Spring is an ideal time for an outdoor ceremony. This season offers pleasant weather without the summer heat or heavy rains. Keep in mind this is peak wedding season in Brisbane, so make sure to book your vendors early or consider a weekday wedding!

Summer (December to February): While summer is full of energy and excitement, Brisbane can get quite humid and hot with the occasional Summer storms in the afternoon. Consider an indoor, air-conditioned venue or an early morning ceremony to avoid the midday heat. Also plan your portrait time to be later in the afternoon/evening to avoid the heat and harsh lighting.

Autumn (March to May): Like Spring, Autumn is a fantastic time for elopements. The cooler, dry weather makes outdoor ceremonies comfortable, and the golden Autumn colours add warmth to your photos. Keep in mind that this is also a busy wedding season in Brisbane, so make sure to book your vendors early or consider a weekday wedding!

Winter (June to August): Brisbane Winters are beautiful with the mild weather and plenty of sunny days. If you want to avoid peak wedding season, Winter elopements offer beautiful, crisp days, especially for ceremonies held later in the morning/early afternoon. You’ll also get a beautiful sunset glow this time of year.

How to Pick a Location for Your Brisbane Elopement

When choosing the perfect location for your elopement, consider the following:

Venue or Outdoor Space?: Decide whether you prefer a more structured location like a wedding venue, boutique hotel or historical building OR a scenic outdoor spot such as a park, beach, or mountain outlook.

Guest List: Elopements are usually small and intimate, but think about whether you want to invite a handful of close friends or family (up to 20 guests). If you’re inviting guests, ensure your location can accommodate them.

Accessibility: Consider how easy it will be for you and your guests to reach the location. Some outdoor locations may require a bit of hiking, while others might be more accessible by car or public transport.

Weather: Brisbane’s subtropical climate can bring unexpected showers, especially in Summer. If you’re planning an outdoor elopement, have a backup plan, such as a nearby covered area or a local venue you can quickly move to in case of rain. But don’t worry – if I’m your photographer I’ll always have umbrellas on hand for you! 🙂

Personal Connection: Choose a location that holds meaning to you as a couple. Whether it’s the spot where you had your first date or a place that symbolizes a shared passion, your location should feel special to both of you.

Top Spots for Wedding Photos in Brisbane

Brisbane offers an amazing range of photo locations, whether you want lush greenery, elegant architecture, modern cityscapes or river views.

Brisbane City Botanic Gardens: A lush garden full of beautiful flora, the botanic gardens are ideal for couples seeking a natural, peaceful setting in the heart of the city. You can either have your whole wedding in the gardens OR you can get married nearby and have your photos in the gardens. You also have the river close by and Government House for some more elegant photos in front of the heritage architecture.

Brisbane Powerhouse & New Farm Park: The Brisbane Powerhouse is one of Brisbane’s most iconic venues close to the city with its brick architecture and river backdrop. The Powerhouse is a great venue for your ceremony and photos AND it’s also right next door to New Farm Park – one of Brisbane’s oldest and most beautiful parks with a view of the city in the background.

City Streets and Laneways: Brisbane’s city streets, especially in the heritage areas, offer amazing urban backdrops for more modern and elegant wedding photos. Government House (also near the Botanic Gardens), Anzac Square and Post Office Lane are some of my personal favourite photo spots in the centre of the city.

Mount Tamborine (Scenic Rim): A short drive from Brisbane and you’re in Mount Tamborine surrounded by lush greenery, waterfalls, gardens and incredible views of Brisbane and surrounds. There are a number of gorgeous wedding venues at Mount Tamborine that offer great elopement packages and there are also some beautiful gardens and hiking locations for the more adventurous couples.

Glass House Mountains: If you’re willing to venture a bit outside the city, the Glass House Mountains provide dramatic and breathtaking landscapes, ideal for adventurous couples who love the outdoors. You can hike to your favourite spot or keep it simple with a beautiful venue (like Tiffany’s Maleny that overlook the mountains) or ask me about some picturesque secret spots for photos with the glasshouse mountains as your backdrop.
