Are you feeling nervous about your upcoming family photo session? It’s totally normal to feel a little jittery before a photoshoot. But don’t worry, I’m here to help. With some simple preparation and confidence-boosting pointers, you and your loved ones will look and feel fantastic in front of the camera.

I’ve rounded up five detailed tips that will help you feel prepared and confident for your session. So let’s dive in!

Choose comfortable outfits

Wearing the right clothes can make a huge difference in how you feel during your family photo session. Choose outfits you and your little ones feel comfortable and confident in. The key here is to coordinate your outfits so that they look good together but aren’t too matchy-matchy. Avoid clothes with big logos or bold patterns that may distract from the main focus of the photo: your family! Don’t forget to check the weather and dress accordingly, too.

If you want to make sure you don’t miss a thing when it comes to planning the outfits for your family photoshoot, grab my “What to Wear Guide” – it takes you through the exact steps you need to know to choose the perfect outfits, including detailed examples from past family shoots as well as tips for makeup and hair, and a sneak peek at my client wardrobe.

Be honest with your photographer

Your photographer is there to help you feel comfortable and confident during your family photo session. Don’t be afraid to communicate your needs and concerns with them. Let them know if you have any specific ideas or poses you want to try, or if you have any insecurities that you want them to work around. A good photographer will listen to you and make sure you feel comfortable and happy with the photos.

If it comes to the day of your photo session and the kids are playing up, unwell, or something just isn’t right, don’t worry. I have a Complimentary Reshoot Guarantee because I want to make sure you have a stress-free experience. So if things aren’t quite working out, simply let me know and I’ll schedule a re-shoot at no extra cost to you.

Bring props or accessories

Props or accessories can add a fun and personal touch to your family photos. Bring items that represent your family, such as a favourite book, a musical instrument, or a beloved family pet (aka your doggo!). You can also bring hats, scarves, or jewellery to add some variety to your outfits. Just make sure that the props or accessories aren’t too distracting and don’t take away from the main focus of the photo – your big, gorgeous smiles!

Have fun and be yourselves

Don’t worry too much about getting the perfect shot or looking “picture-perfect”. Leave “nailing the shot” up to your photographer, we have a lot of experience with that! 😉

All you need to do is enjoy the moment with your family – consider it a chance to make some fun memories together! When you’re having fun and being yourselves, the photos will naturally look amazing and joy-filled.

Get excited about your session

Instead of worrying about how you might look or all the things that could go wrong, take a moment to imagine yourself looking happy and comfortable in your family photos. Just picture how proud you’ll feel when you see the final photos in frames lining your living room walls! Remember, you won’t be able to help but feel confident when you focus on the simple fact that you get to capture precious moments with your family – that is invaluable!
